Pilot tricone bits are mainly used for guided drilling in rocky strata, usually used together with mud motors and mixing silos, using the curvature of the mud motors themselves or specialized inclined short joints for inclination, and can be divided into two types of teeth according to the different tooth shapes, TCI drill bit and Milled tooth tricone bit (steel), with the former being suitable for all types of rocky strata, and the latter being mainly suitable for soft rock or hard soil layers.

Three steps in such an operation are:

1>the first stage is to drill a small diameter pilot hole.

2>The second stage is to enlarge the hole with a larger diameter cutting tool called an HDD Reamer,

Rock Reamer or Hole Opener.

3>The third stage is inserting the casing pipe or other product into the enlarged hole.

Hole opening is the onerous task in this operation, but, the key for hole opening operation is the hole opener choosing according to the operation equipment and formation.
